International Man of Mystery

…or you could just call him Tom. Tom is from London and is here in Jamaica volunteering at Portland Rehabilitation Centre for two months. He is a caring young man who believes in doing his part to help those of us, who are less fortunate.

Much Love to Tom and Beth from New York State, thank you both for working Big Wonders in Jamaica…respect.

A Lickle Sup’m Sup’m

This drink is called something or other wine, mi really caan rememba. Anyway it was the drink of the morning courtesy of Emperor. This wine was a gift from a guest and he did not hesitate to make an early morning party out of it. A little something something for everyone, Emperor passed around cool vibes. So what’s in it, of course Jamaican White Rum and …got you…I’m keeping this one to myself. I will say this though, it is an acquired taste.

Papine High School

It’s summer time here in Jam Rock and Papine High School came out full blast. Papine High School’s Summer Programme is being held to promote self-esteem, social skills, and intelligence among other things. This keeps students engaged, instead of may be sitting home doing nothing…unable to socialize with their usual friends from school and not able to meet new friends. Therefore a mixture of different grade levels was at Ocho Rios Beach, chaperoned by Ms. Thompson, Mr. Brown, and other teachers. The students enjoyed a day filled with games, such as soccer, rolling in the sand, racing into the water, laughing, and just having fun…a break from school.

The teachers were very strict, particularly Ms. Thompson, she protected her students…like us Jamaicans love to say…“Motha Hen”. It simply means no one takes pictures without her permission, rightfully so. She was the referee and player of a soccer match. What I loved about Ms. Thompson was that she incorporated Jamaican Patios into her communication with her students, as well as English. I wish I had more of that in high school. Also, she had girls playing soccer alongside the boys. I told her how pleased I was to see this and was told, “They are the ones playing it now”.  This means more and more girls are now choosing soccer as a sport here in Jamaica, as opposed to the traditional netball or track and field sports.

Papine High was once hockey champs, so not only can Ms. Thompson play soccer, she plays netball, basketball, and hockey…pretty darn great.

I enjoyed talking to Ms. Thompson. I got a closer look into Jamaican education and found out, now I can put aside my concerns. Concerns I had about the Jamaican school system, which may not be completely what it used to be…like back when I was a child. Well I am happy to say Papine High students were very respectful and always answered me “yes Miss” or “no Miss”. Well done Papine High School.

Jamaicans, Wi All One

Jamaicans, Wi All One

By, Sheryl Stark

Excuse Me
Just a moment
Yes you Big Man
Rude Buoy
Ghetto Youth
Put dung the guns
And rise up two fingers
For Peace

Excuse Me
Yes you Rude Girl
Sexy Gal
Champion Bubbla
Stop the say say say
Read a book to yu youth

Excuse Me
Just a moment
Lickle Pickney
Read a book
And then read some more
Laugh and play together

Let’s embrace each other’s opinions
Let’s come together to stop the violence
Accept others for who they are
And come together for Peace

Treasure Beach: Off the beaten path into country lifestyle

Treasure Beach is where I left my heart. This tranquil, laid back, fishing village is definitely Jamaica’s Hidden Jewel. Treasure Beach sits on the south side of the island in St. Elizabeth, also known as St. Bess; the black sand beach is great for long meditative walks or to just sit back, relax, and look out to sea. A serene and peaceful atmosphere, in which one can capture the true essence of the sun as it kisses the surface of the ocean each morning and at dusk. While in the background you hear the sound of the waves playing their rhythm against the shore, if you are looking for all this and more, then Treasure Beach is your destination for sure. This time spent away from the hustle and bustle adds new meaning to the phrase “no problem Mon”.

 Eggy’s

Make sure to stop by Eggy’s on one of your many long walks, mi know you will get thirsty and need someting fi drink. Don’t worry, remember it is a laid back, fishing village, no shoes required. Eggy’s is where everybody knows everybody, no matter where in the world you’re from. This one room bar run by a barefoot Rasta Man named Eggy, is where locals and foreigners meet to hang out with family and friends to celebrate togetherness. Some even meet once each year and come from all around the world. Yea man, ah just “One Love”. Eggy’s is where we met Mr. Fuir, an expatriate from Germany, whose been living in Jamaica five years now. He loves his peaceful surroundings and the healings he gets from his ailments because of no stress. He also never wears a watch. Wicked!
