Jamaica at the Penn Relays making their way around the track. I am very proud of my fellow country men and women. Nuff respect!

Jungle King Performance

Roy ‘Jungle King’ Hamilton is a friend of Jeff and I, and a prominent figure in Jamaica’s culture. He has taught many students, particularly at St. Anne’s High  School, how to dance and perform with grace and soul. Jungle King has choreographed and composed the music for many African dances…including the one he performed at last year’s Curry Festival. He also received many awards and recognition for his work as a dancer and instructor. See link below to watch his performance.

I am very grateful to have gotten the opportunity to photograph such an inspirational man while he performed. I love observing Jungle’s mannerisms as he speaks; his words are very well pronounced with a ting of Jamaican Patois now and then, his laugh is contagious, his body is always posed like the dancer he is, and he tells a story like no one else can. I learned so much about our traditional dance names, styles, and how and why these dances came about.

Jungle also mentioned that before a performance he must first cleanse himself…clear his mind of all worries and fears…simply because he dances with fire. As you can see, playing with fire could get dangerous. I enjoyed watching him perform, because the beat of the drums, the chanting, and the dance steps blended together so well, that it captivated my senses.

Town Crier

Yes man! I love how we hold on to some of our Jamaican traditions. One of many is the announcing of events, using loud speakers on or in a car driving around town and in the country areas.…blasting the time, venue, artists and whatever else they care to share, while playing music. Speak about guerrilla marketing, nonetheless a great way to get folks’ attention and get the stage show jamming.

Notice how deep the road curves and if you look closely, you’ll also see a little zinc shop off the roadside. ‘Smile, you’re in Jamaica man’.

A River’s Path

This river is located in Banister, a little village just outside of Old Harbour. There hasn’t been much rain lately so the river is very low at this time, but look how high it can get. Nonetheless, I walked the river path, which made me feel very eerie; the way the trees towered over me, the loose dirt and stones on the river banks…I felt like a wall of water could come rushing towards me at any minute. Simply put, as much as I wanted the experience, I couldn’t wait to get out of there, lol.
