Positive Vibrations
By Bob Marley

Live if you wanna Live
Rastaman Irations
Positive
That’s why we got to give
I and I vibrations
Positive
Got to have a good vibe
Iyaman Irations
Irie ites
Wo-wo-ohhh
Positive vibrations
Positive

If you get down and you quarrel everyday you’re saying prayers to the devils I say
Why not help one another on their way, make it much easier
Just a little bit easier
Say you just can’t live that negative way (if you know what I mean)
Make way for the positive days
Cus it’s new day
New time
And if it’s a new feeling (looky here)
Then it’s a new sign
Oh what a new day

Picking up
Are you picking up now?
Jah love protects us
Rastaman vibration
Positive
I and I vibration
Positive
Iyaman Irations
Irie ites
Wo-wo-ohhhh

PICKING UP, ARE YOU PICKING UP NOW?
JAH LOVE
JAH LOVE PROTECTS US

Chris ‘Forever Young’ Whyte

“Mi, a stay forever young”, Chris’ eyes flashed with his proud maroon ancestry while he beat his chest, “yea mon, forever young”, and then he smiled.

We met Chris at Great Huts where he works, and immediately felt connected to him. He is a man of peace and has deep emotions for his children, his fellow-man, his ancestry, and a special little boy named Michael, who lives in the same community as Chris…Moor Town. On his days off from work, Chris also deejays; now hold that thought for a second.

Michael has special needs and was once shunned by society, because he was not ‘normal’. Now this is where Chris stepped in, instead of joining with others, he made a difference by taking Michael with him while he deejays. Chris became a mentor and now Michael is being accepted by others and his social skills are developing.

Chris made a huge difference, in his community, by standing up for what he believes in and he did it using music. Keep up the great work Chris…keep working Big Wonders in Jamaica

Yu done know Chris yu will stay forever young, yea man. Nuff Respect.

Hard-working Jamaicans: Tipping

If you are the kind of person to be up for an early morning swim, then you are in luck, this trio will serenade you with songs from The Legend (Bob Marley) with a more traditional twist…mento style. I was in my room watching this lovely, mix-matched performance and had to run down by the beach so I could drop a few bills in their tip jar…yes man, please TIP them. These wonderful men walk the beach singing and playing their instruments for us, that is how they make their living and $1US will not break you man. It is just the way we think, try thinking this way.

First always wear the other person’s shoes completely because, I believe, that is one of the keys to understanding each other’s behavior. Second, jobs are scarce in Jamaica and these guys have amazing talent, so instead of stealing or begging they formed a band, walking the beach working for us while at the same time sweating their butts off. Now they’ve worked…they should get paid. However if you do not feel like giving then fine, but please do not go around telling your family and friends how you got bothered in Jamaica just because you cannot think globally. I see it as a plus, I am sure you are in Jam Rock to relax, unwind, and to get away, so enjoy the ‘cheap’ but beautiful sound of live music…it only adds to the experience. Anyways, by the time they left everyone was happier and friendlier. I think that is a job well done. Remember to pack lots of smiles and patience when traveling to Jamaica; she does not like grumpy people.

List of people one should usually tip and as always tipping is a personal choice:

  • Driver that drove you around all day to different attractions
  • The tour guides
  • The beach singers
  • Beach attendants
  • Waitresses and waiters (check bill to make sure tip was not added on)
  • Maid
  • Room service
  • Bell boy
  • Baggage handlers

A famous Jamaican proverb says “every mickle mek a muckle”, (every bit adds up), I give a few bucks, you give a buck, then someone else gives another dollar. The amount of money that person made at the end of the day will not get he/she rich, but will make life a little more comfortable. Now, please also respect how much you tip. I have seen folks tip a driver $50JA (59 cents in US) and he drove us around all day. One can get away with a lot in Jamaica when it comes to how inexpensive things are, but remember it’s about respecting another person and their culture. Use discretion when tipping, so not to insult anyone after a very courteous and friendly service.  This Rasta Man walks a different beach singing Songs of Freedom. His style is crisp, clean, and at a faster rhythm. He too had great vocals.

Abigail Green the Artist

She may be shy, soft-spoken, and have a pretty smile, but her art work is bold, fierce, and deadly accurate. Her name is Abigail Green and this natural-born artist gave me access to her life and portfolio, simply because I was blown away, and a little persistence paid off.

Abigail has all the makings of an artist…she is professional and talented. She is confident that she can get the job done, her positioning is ‘You Name It, I Draw It’, and has done exactly that now for seventeen years. Abigail is located in the heart of Ocho Rios and has drawn for both locals and tourists alike. A pencil and eraser are used to capture one’s personality on cartridge paper more so than the picture itself. This amazing artist also paints landscapes and folk dance pieces using acrylic paints.  Abigail’s goal is to become a tattoo artist and her dream is to make people happy by immortalizing their smiles in classic style and sophistication…a self portrait drawn by a true artist.

Day, Me say day O

“Come mister tally man tally me bananas”.

Day-O a Jamaican mento folk song, is best used as an example of calypso music. A call and response song by workers loading bananas on ships during the night. ‘Daylight come’ which is the end of their shift so they wanna go home, but before they can leave, their work must be tallied up.

Emancipendence 2011

Jamaicans love sand, water, and party…music. To truly experience our independence celebration on August 6, you would have to be there, to feel the vibes and bond with the people of Jamaica. Pictures can show you, but the physical experience will last a lifetime. If you haven’t already, it’s time to take a plunge into a different culcha (culture).
